How to Choose a Hygienic Pump: Sanitary Lobe vs Centrifugal vs Progressive Cavity

Choosing a hygienic pump starts with the product, not the pump. Thin or thick, clean or full of pieces, delicate or robust: these decide which of the three main hygienic designs fits.

Hygienic Centrifugal Pumps

A hygienic centrifugal pump, also called a sanitary centrifugal pump, throws liquid outward with a spinning impeller. It is the right choice for thin, clean liquids such as water, milk, juice and beverages, at high flow and low cost. It struggles with high viscosity and with products that carry large pieces or are easily damaged by shear.

Sanitary Lobe Pumps

A sanitary lobe pump uses two rotating lobes to carry product around the casing. It is gentle, easy to clean and handles thicker products, including some with soft solids, at moderate pressure. It is common in dairy, sauces and creams.

Hygienic Progressive Cavity Pumps

A progressive cavity pump moves product in sealed cavities between a helical rotor and a stator. It gives smooth, low-pulsation flow with very low shear, and copes with the thickest products and with solids. It also self-primes and builds pressure well. Hygienic versions use polished stainless surfaces and drainable, dead-zone-free design.

Quick Guide

  • Thin, clean liquids at high flow: hygienic centrifugal pump
  • Thick or delicate products at moderate pressure: sanitary lobe pump
  • Very thick, shear-sensitive or particle-laden products, or higher pressure: hygienic progressive cavity pump

Other Points to Check

  • Cleaning method: CIP or SIP, and whether the pump drains fully
  • Required standards and certificates
  • Temperature, pressure and flow
  • Seal type and how easily it can be inspected and cleaned
