What is a diaphragm pump?

A diaphragm pump moves fluid by flexing a diaphragm back and forth inside a pump chamber. The diaphragm pulls fluid in on one stroke and pushes it out on the next, and check valves keep the flow moving one way. Because the fluid touches only the chamber, valves and diaphragm, there is no shaft seal to leak. That makes diaphragm pumps a common choice for aggressive, abrasive, shear-sensitive and hazardous liquids, and they can run dry without damage.

Types of diaphragm pumps we supply

Air-operated double diaphragm (AODD) pumps. Compressed air drives two diaphragms in turn. They need no electrical supply, suit hazardous areas when specified with the right certification, handle solids and run dry. They suit chemical transfer, tank unloading, sumps and slurry. See our AODD pumps.

Electric diaphragm pumps. An electric motor drives the diaphragms, so they use less energy than an air-driven pump on continuous duty and give steadier flow. They suit transfer, filter-press feed and drum emptying where power is available.

Hydraulic and mechanical metering diaphragm pumps. A piston or cam moves the diaphragm to deliver a precise, repeatable dose against pressure. They suit chemical injection, water treatment dosing and process control. See our chemical dosing and metering pumps and how to choose a chemical dosing pump.

Materials and diaphragm options

The wetted materials decide whether a pump lasts in your fluid, so we match them to the chemical, temperature and solids content.

BallsPP, PVDF, acetal, EPDM, Viton, NBR, PTFEChosen to match the fluid
SeatsPP, PVDF, acetal, stainless steel, PE-UHMWE on larger sizesPE-UHMWE suits abrasive duty

ATEX rangeConductive PP, PVDF and acetal bodies, plus aluminium and stainless steelCertified for gas and dust atmospheres

Temperature limits depend on the body: PP -4 to +65 °C, acetal -5 to +80 °C, and PVDF, aluminium and stainless steel -20 to +95 °C. The range runs from 4 to 1,050 L/min with 1/4 inch to 3 inch ports, handles solids from 2 mm to 12 mm depending on size, and runs on air at up to 6 to 8 bar.

Applications by industry

  • Oil, gas and petrochemical: chemical and additive transfer, sump and drain duty, tank cleaning waste.
  • Water and wastewater: sludge, lime and polymer transfer, filter-press feed, sump emptying. See our wastewater treatment work.
  • Chemicals: acids, caustic, solvents, resins and coatings.
  • Mining and construction: abrasive slurry, dewatering, tailings.
  • Food, beverage and pharma: viscous and shear-sensitive products with sanitary designs. See our hygienic pumps.

Diaphragm pumps compared with other pump types

Choose a diaphragm pump when the fluid is corrosive, abrasive, contains solids, is hazardous, or the pump must run dry. Choose a centrifugal pump for clean, low-viscosity liquid at high flow; read AODD vs centrifugal pumps for chemical transfer. Choose a progressive cavity pump for very viscous fluid, sludge or steady, low-pulsation flow; read progressive cavity vs AODD pumps. A peristaltic pump suits low-flow, shear-sensitive duty.

How to choose a diaphragm pump

Send us these details and we will size the pump:

  1. Fluid name, concentration and temperature
  2. Viscosity and solids size and content
  3. Flow rate and discharge pressure
  4. Suction conditions (flooded or lift) and pipe size
  5. Power available (compressed air or electric) and hazardous-area rating
  6. Whether you need a continuous or metered flow

Pulsation from a diaphragm pump can be smoothed with pulsation dampeners.

Spare parts, support and delivery

We supply diaphragms, balls, seats, air valves and repair kits for AODD and metering pumps, with technical assistance and after-sales support across Saudi Arabia and the GCC. Send us your enquiry with the pump model or nameplate photo for a quotation.

Diaphragm pump FAQ

What is a diaphragm pump used for?

It transfers corrosive, abrasive, viscous or hazardous liquids and slurries, and doses chemicals precisely. Typical uses are chemical transfer, sludge, filter-press feed and tank unloading.

What is the difference between a diaphragm pump and an AODD pump?

AODD means air-operated double diaphragm. It is one type of diaphragm pump, driven by compressed air. Other types are electric-driven and metering diaphragm pumps.

Can a diaphragm pump run dry?

Yes. AODD pumps can run dry without damage, which makes them suited to sumps and tank emptying. Check the manufacturer’s data for electric and metering types.

Which diaphragm material is best for acids and solvents?

PTFE is the usual choice for aggressive chemicals, with a PP, PVDF or stainless steel body chosen for the fluid. We confirm compatibility against your chemical and temperature before quoting.

Can diaphragm pumps handle solids and slurry?

Yes, within the size limit of the pump. Tell us the particle size and content so we can select the right balls, seats and diaphragm.

Are diaphragm pumps suitable for hazardous areas?

AODD pumps need no electrical supply and are widely used in hazardous areas. Choose the correct conductive materials and certification for your zone, and ask us for the details.

How do I choose between an AODD and an electric diaphragm pump?

Choose AODD where compressed air is available, power is restricted, or the area is hazardous. Choose electric where air is costly and steady, efficient flow matters.

Do diaphragm pumps pulse, and can it be reduced?

Yes, the flow pulses with each stroke. A pulsation dampener on the discharge line smooths the flow and protects pipework.

Do you supply diaphragm pump spare parts in Saudi Arabia?

Yes. We supply diaphragms, balls, seats, air valves and repair kits, and can identify parts from the pump model or nameplate.

Do you supply diaphragm pumps in Jubail?

Yes. Our Saudi office is in Jubail Industrial Area. We supply AODD, electric and metering diaphragm pumps and spare parts to Jubail and the Eastern Province, and across the GCC.

How do I get a quotation for a diaphragm pump?
