Power Energy Gulf provides benzene and BTEX removal for refineries, petrochemical plants and chemical facilities in Saudi Arabia and the GCC. BTEX stands for benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene. Together with other VOCs and chlorinated hydrocarbons, these compounds are hazardous and tightly controlled in wastewater discharges and in air emissions. We remove them from wastewater and process streams and recover them as reusable fuel, instead of sending them for disposal.

Why Benzene and BTEX Removal Matters

Benzene is toxic and a known human carcinogen, so plants face strict limits on how much can leave in wastewater or vent to air. BTEX also fouls downstream equipment and drives up hazardous waste handling and trucking costs. Removing it at the source helps plants meet discharge specifications and cuts the volume of hazardous waste they have to dispose of.

The VC SORB Process

VC SORB is our VOC extraction and recovery process. It converts hazardous BTEX, VOCs and chlorinated hydrocarbons in wastewater into reusable fuel. The process is designed to reduce hazardous waste by up to 99.9% and to cut disposal costs by more than 70%.

What We Remove

  • Benzene and BTEX
  • VOCs and semi-volatile organics (SVOCs)
  • Chlorinated hydrocarbons and polyaromatics
  • Oil and grease, and free hydrocarbons
  • TOC, suspended solids, phenol and glycol
  • Ammonia and spent caustic in petrochemical wastewater

Problems We Solve

  • Meeting strict discharge specifications on oil, benzene, VOCs, TOC, suspended solids, polyaromatics and chlorinated contaminants
  • Meeting discharge limits for releases to the sea and other sensitive marine environments
  • Cutting hazardous hydrocarbon waste disposal and trucking costs
  • Reducing fouling on process strippers, saturators, reboilers and dilution steam generators from tar, coke and hydrocarbon-coated iron sulfides
  • Protecting heat exchangers from fouling by tar, asphaltenes, heavies and polyaromatic hydrocarbons
  • Recycling and reusing process water, and recovering oil and valuable hydrocarbons from waste
  • Reducing membrane fouling so desalination and treatment plants keep their design throughput

How a Project Runs

  1. Problem characterization. We work out the nature of the problem and the contaminants involved.
  2. Site study and analysis. A survey of the site and the streams.
  3. Demonstration or pilot testing. Where needed, we prove the process on your stream.
  4. Option evaluation. Options are compared on performance, reliability, economics and life cycle cost, including maintenance.
  5. Design and engineering. A process design and engineering package, with documentation to support MOC, HAZOP and PSSR.
  6. Project delivery. Engineering, management and installation support.
  7. Operations support. Site operation and maintenance support if needed, and a troubleshooting service.

Rent, Rent-to-Own or Operate

You can rent the equipment, rent it with an option to own, or have us operate it. This lets plants solve the problem quickly at a fraction of the capital cost. Units are engineered for your conditions, skid mounted and modular, and available in explosion-proof (Ex) or standard versions depending on the area classification. They are built for high flow and low pressure drop, and are simple to retrofit into existing systems. See our mobile treatment units for the rental fleet.

Industries Served

Oil and gas production, LNG and gas processing, refineries, and petrochemical plants including olefins, aromatics, VCM and chlorinated derivatives, styrene and polystyrene, MTBE, methanol and LDPE/HDPE. Also fertilizer plants, aluminum, steel, mining, power plants and membrane desalination plants.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is BTEX?

BTEX is the group of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene, volatile aromatic compounds found in petroleum products and refinery and petrochemical wastewater. Benzene is the most hazardous of the group and the most tightly controlled.

How is benzene removed from wastewater?

Common routes include stripping, adsorption and extraction. Power Energy uses its VC SORB VOC extraction and recovery process, which converts BTEX, VOCs and chlorinated hydrocarbons in wastewater into reusable fuel. The best route depends on the stream, so we characterize it first.

Can you treat benzene on site?

Yes. Skid-mounted units can be rented, rented to own or operated by us, and mobilized to your site for planned work, turnarounds or upset conditions.

What happens to the recovered hydrocarbons?

The process converts the recovered BTEX, VOCs and chlorinated hydrocarbons into reusable fuel, which reduces the hazardous waste you need to dispose of.

Which industries do you serve?

Refineries, petrochemical and chemical plants, gas processing, fertilizers, aluminum, steel, mining, power plants and desalination plants across Saudi Arabia and the GCC.

What do you need to recommend a solution?

Send us the stream (wastewater or process fluid), the contaminants and their concentrations if known, the flow rate and the discharge specification you must meet.
